Svetozar Gligoric, "Gliga", was for decades the first name of Yugoslav chess; "Gligoric plays for Yugoslavia" was not a phrase but a fact. The 1970 Tournament of Peace in Rovinj and Zagreb is remembered above all for Fischer's great comeback and convincing win, but the company was world class: Korchnoi, Smyslov, Hort, Ivkov, Petrosian.
That is why this game matters: with the black pieces Gliga beats Tigran Petrosian, a former world champion (1963-1969) and the hardest nut to crack on the planet. To beat the iron Tigran with patience, using his own weapon, was something very few could manage.
