Ljubomir Ljubojevic, a Belgrader of fiery and unpredictable style, was in those years at the very top, at one point the third-ranked player in the world and the strongest Serbian player of his generation.
Linares 1985 was already an elite event (category XIV) that gathered the cream of world chess. Ljuba won it, sharing first place with Huebner, one of the finest results of his career. This win with White over Viktor Korchnoi, a two-time challenger for the world crown and still a member of the narrowest elite, is one of the pillars of that triumph.
