In the late fifties Aleksandar Matanovic was one of the pillars of the Yugoslav school, a first-rate theoretician who would later launch the legendary Chess Informant. The 1958 Interzonal in Portoroz was one of the strongest tournaments of the decade: it opened the road to the match for the world crown, and it was there that the fifteen-year-old Fischer broke through into the Candidates.
The tournament was won convincingly by Mikhail Tal, a year and a half before he took the throne from Botvinnik. That is exactly why this game matters: Matanovic handed the future world champion and tournament winner one of his rare defeats.
