At sixteen Alisa Maric became the youngest champion of Yugoslavia, and by twenty she was already third in the world among women, one of the best players this region has produced; a couple of years later she would play a match for the right to challenge the world champion.
In Lugano in 1988 the eighteen-year-old Viswanathan Anand sat across the board from her, already rated around 2520 and on the threshold of the world elite. With the black pieces, rated around 2345, Alisa beat the future world champion. A game to remember, and proof of how far ahead of her time she was.
