Two generations meet at the 52nd Yugoslav Championship in Nikšić in 1997. Aleksandar Kovačević has White against Svetozar Gligorić, an eleven-time national champion and one of the defining names of Yugoslav chess.
The Closed Ruy Lopez was Gligoric's own terrain for decades, and it is right there that the young Kovacevic outplays him. Both knights are sacrificed on f6 (25.Ngf6+!), Black's kingside cracks, and the bishop on f6 takes over the whole board. To beat the doyen of the Yugoslav school with his own weapon, at the national championship in Niksic, is the kind of game that is remembered.
