Smederevska Palanka, round five in 1956: Nikola Karaklajić has White against Austria’s Karl Robatsch. Karaklajić is also remembered as a radio presenter and chess populariser, while Robatsch’s name lives on in the Modern Defence. Here we meet them at the tournament board.
Karaklajić brings his rooks and queen towards the kingside as Black’s king loses its pawn cover. After 22.Rxf6 Kxf6 23.Rf1+ Kxg5 comes 24.Qe3+, and Robatsch resigns. The final queen move is a check, gaining time to continue the attack on the exposed king. Compare how many white pieces join the attack with how many black pieces remain far from the defence.
