Aleksandar Indjic, a grandmaster from Belgrade, won the European Championship in 2024. He arrived with plenty of tournament experience: he had become a grandmaster in 2013 and won the Serbian Championship in 2014, 2018, 2020, 2023 and 2024.
Our selection follows him at the 2024 UzChess Cup and the European Championship in Petrovac later that year.
At the 2024 UzChess Cup, Inđić had White against Azerbaijani grandmaster Aydin Suleymanli. This encounter opens our selection of his games.
Against Aydin Suleymanli at the 2024 UzChess Cup, start by following just one pawn: the h-pawn, on the right edge of the board from White’s side. Indjic plays h4, h5 and h6, then opens a file beside Black’s king.
That simple plan takes careful calculation. White castles queenside and brings his pieces into the fight. Play through the game to see how a pawn starting on the edge can change the whole position.
The next game takes us to the 2024 European Individual Championship in Petrovac. Inđić faced Maksim Chigaev in round six.
At the 2024 European Championship in Petrovac, Indjic also showed how much life an endgame can have. Against Maxim Chigaev in round six, the queens came off, but there was plenty of play left.
Watch the white king: it travels through f4 and g5 to f6, deep in Black’s position. In an endgame, the king becomes an important attacking piece. This game makes the point beautifully.
In round seven of the same championship, Inđić faced top seed Vladimir Fedoseev, this time with Black.
Round seven brought Vladimir Fedoseev, the tournament’s top seed. Indjic had Black, and his knights took centre stage.
With 28...Nxg4, a sequence of tactical blows and checks begins. As you play through the moves, watch how the knights work with the queen to leave White’s king fewer and fewer safe squares.
A final-round draw with Black against Daniel Dardha completed the job: an unbeaten 9/11, half a point clear of his closest rivals. Indjic was European champion.
The three games on this page show different parts of his craft: advancing pawns, an active king and pieces working together in attack. Each rewards a play-through, followed by another look at the moment the plan comes into focus.
